Warm pistachios

An observation on character, measured in more than carats. October 14, 2024.

A small white ceramic bowl.
Warm pistachios.

No one asked for them.
No one would complain if they weren’t served.

But they arrive anyway.

You crack one open absentmindedly.
Then another.

Somewhere between the first and the third, you realise—

This isn’t about hunger.
It’s about being looked after… before you had to ask.

A few days ago, Ritika, a customer called.

There was noise in the background—voices, suggestions, a bit of insistence.

“Just ask them on WhatsApp,” someone said.

She went quiet for a moment.

Then she said, very simply,
“No.”

Later, she told me why.

“Because I know what happens next,” she said.
“We’ll compare. We’ll keep checking.”

She paused.

“But we won’t come there.”

Another pause. Softer this time.

“And anyway…” she said, almost thinking aloud,
“you can’t really understand these things from a picture.”

I thought about that after the call ended.

About how some things survive being photographed—
weight, price, design.

And how some things don’t.

Some experiences are built quietly, outside the transaction.
A doctor who calls to follow up when they don’t have to.
A store that cleans up while you’re choosing a new piece.

A jeweler who won’t disclose to your relative what you bought last.

Small things.

The kind that are easy to leave out.
Easy to save on.
Easy to say, it won’t make a difference.

Like warm pistachios.

You can list them on a menu.
You can even send a picture.

But that’s not where they live.

Some things can be compared.

And some things…

stay with you, long after.

Because in a world where the main offering is easy to copy…

…it’s the warm pistachios that people remember.
And sometimes, talk about.
